Dwarves
Location:
The Shimmering Grotto (their home city located on the Irenic River {the river flows right through the city), just south of the Cliffs of Fortune, named for their rich mining minerals, all kinds of metals are found here).
Appearance:
The tallest dwarf on record was five feet tall. The average height for a dwarf is about four feet tall. They are short, and stocky, almost like a movable brick wall. The men are very muscular, due to their mining and blacksmithing roots, the women vary in size depending on their chosen profession (NOTE : women can be miners and blacksmiths too) All the men have some form of facial, particularly a beard. Due to some mishaps, the blacksmiths and the miners keep their beards shorter, and closer to their chin, to avoid having it set on fire, or getting it caught in something when working. Dwarves can go bald, just like humans. The oldest dwarf to have lived was 100 years old. The average age of a dwarf, however, is only 75. For dwarves, this is a long time because of the amount of physical stress their bodies endure during their lifetime. The majority of the dwarves are blacksmiths or miners, but some who are not live to be longer. Because the vast majority of the dwarves work in the mines, the life expectancy of a dwarf is rather low.
Personality:
The dwarves are a hearty bunch. They accept anyone into their city with open arms, and are a very trusting people; always willing to lend a hand. They like to eat, and drink, and can consume mass amounts of alcohol before being labeled drunk. To try to drink a dwarf under the table usually means you are going to wake up with a very bad hangover, which the dwarves have a cure for, lucky for you. The best ‘normal’ weapons and armor come from dwarves, the only thing better then dwarven weapons and armor, is enchanted dwarven armor. They are trained fighters, and when they are needed to fight, everyone who can hold a weapon can fight. They are only found in their main city, the Shimmering Grotto, which has been constantly expanding it’s borders due to the increase of population (they reproduce as often and fast as humans), some dwarves do travel around for various reasons, adventure, selling, whatever. But even though they travel, the Shimmering Grotto is their home. Even though most dwarves are miners or blacksmiths, dwarves have a fear of being in small places too long, meaning, they are claustrophobic. They can tolerate small spaces for a few hours, but anything longer then half a day starts to make them worry. This is why instead of living in or on the mountain, they choose the plains around the Irenic River.
History:
A few hundred years ago, the dwarves was on of the second set of races to come into existence. The gods Tzartak and Ygal crerated the dwarves with an extensive knowledge of how to mine, and then what to do with the ore they get from mining. The idea was with people who could use the natural ores of the land, things would become more interesting, for examples, more battles, and more things for the gods to watch, instead of a bunch of ants runnin around doing nothing. The dwarves used to live in the mountains of the Cliffs of Fortune, but that changed when the dwarves dug a little too far and a piece of the mountain collapsed down on their city, nearly wiping the dwarves out of existence. The few remaining dwarves, led by a female dwarf of only twenty years of age, left the mountain and created their city on the Irenic River, the Shimmering Grotto. The river was always clear, and gave the plains around them a bright, and sunny appeal, even on the cloudiest of days. At first, the dwarves became farmers, but only a few were able to handle farming, while the other felt the urge to go back to mining and blacksmithing. Eventually, more and more dwarves went back into the mountains to start mining again, and in turn, blacksmithing. They dug out their old city, and fixed up the mountain, taking careful precautions to ensure the mountains would not collapse on them a second time. Having secured the mountains again, the dwarves erected a giant iron cross at the top of the mountain as a monument to their fallen brethren (these aren’t exactly the tallest mountains around, so hauling a big ace heavy cross up to the top, wasn’t so bad.)
